Los Angeles Plastic Surgeon Sends Simple Luxuries to Troops in Afghanistan

Dr. Christine Petti is a board-certified plastic surgeon in Los Angeles, CA. She recently began sending care packages to a group of US Troops serving in Afghanistan, after meeting a member of their company and growing to appreciate his dedication to his mission, his honesty, and his sense of humor.

Dr. Christine Petti has enlisted patients and staff at her Los Angeles plastic surgery practice to support troops serving abroad in Afghanistan. After meeting John Homrig, a member of the US Military, Dr. Petti says she wanted to support him and his fellow troops by sending a care package filled with the simple luxuries often taken for granted and otherwise unavailable overseas.

After meeting Homrig through a professional contact, Dr. Petti says his honesty and motivation caught her attention as she grew to appreciate his dedication to US Military service and his sense of humor. “When he told me he was going overseas to Afghanistan, I knew I wanted to support him and provide him with a link to those he serves and those that love him and respect the work he is doing to protect this country.”

The chance to support the troops is a profound privilege for Dr. Petti. “Giving to our troops is a very small act in relation to the daily, unselfish sacrifice each troop makes.” With plans to send a number of care packages in the future, Dr. Petti says supporting US troops serving abroad is not only important to her, but also her staff and patients. “My professional staff and patients all believe it is vital to send our troops packages that contain items they will enjoy and will not have access to in their location to serve as reminders of home.”

Tricia’s Story

On August 31st, 2010, Dr. Christine Petti performed chin augmentation and SmartLipo™ treatment on Tricia McNatt, and wait until you see Tricia a year later! Tricia was about to be married, and wanted to improve a specific aspect of her appearance that she had long felt self-conscious about. We have followed the progress of Tricia for more than a year, and Dr. Petti and Tricia have even been featured on the hit series, The Doctors, to tell the story.

As you can see in the above “before” photos, Tricia has microgenia, the medical term for a “small chin.” This anatomical deficiency in the jawbone is caused by genetics, and can often be corrected with chin augmentation. Dr. Petti and Tricia decided the best course of action to improve the appearance of her chin was to place a medium-sized silicone chin implant to give the area a more prominent, defined look. Dr. Petti then performed the innovative SmartLipo™ procedure on Tricia to melt surrounding fat and tighten the skin, providing added facial contour along the jawline and making the results appear even more natural and beautiful. After just three weeks, Tricia showed amazing results with a more contoured appearance in the chin and lower face, as seen here on a follow-up appearance on The Doctors.

Silicone Breast Implants are Safe, says the U.S. FDA

Dr. Christine Petti has long noted the value and safety of silicone breast implants for her patients considering breast augmentation in Los Angeles and the surrounding area. Now, one of the top health organizations in the country is reiterating its belief that silicone breast implants are safe.

Up until a few years ago, silicone breast implants had been the subject of controversy. From 1992 until 2006, this particular type of implant had been pulled from the marketplace by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in order to conduct further testing for safety. After 14 years of rigorous testing, silicone breast implants were deemed safe by the FDA for breast augmentation patients aged 22 and over, and breast reconstruction patients of any age. Since their re-introduction to the market, silicone breast implants have become more and more popular, and advances in technology have made them even better.

Recently, the FDA held discussions and heard testimony from a variety of people in the medical community, as well as drug manufacturers and members of the public, to follow up on the safety of silicone breast implants since they again became widely available, and the conclusion that they are safe was re-affirmed. An article from Gardiner Harris of the New York Times cites a chief scientist for the FDA, Dr. William Maisel, as saying that the organization felt the implants were safe before these latest meetings, and that it continues to feel that the implants are safe after the discussions. He also said that, although there are still risks of complications with silicone breast implants, women should be assured that the FDA believes that the implants are safe. Reports of the hearings noted that Dr. Maisel also said he agrees with some groups present at the meeting who stated that some makers of the implants did not do adequate follow-up studies once the implants were re-introduced to the market. Dr. Maisel said post-approval studies will continue and the FDA is committed to making sure follow-up rates improve. There was also consensus that the requirement for M.R.I. scans on a periodic basis in order to detect complications such as “silent rupture” in silicone breast implants should be re-evaluated in cases of healthy, asymptomatic patients, as many experts felt the requirement that patients get the M.R.I. screening three years after placement of implants, and then every two years after that, was unrealistic.
Overall, Dr. Petti believes that the recent findings by the FDA are consistent with her experience providing patients with silicone breast implants, giving women a safe, natural-looking breast augmentation with beautiful results.
